Our primary aim is to teach legally underpinned self defence skills through interpreting Shotokan Kata with modern training methods.
Our secondary aim is to help people improve their health through training that will work their agility, mobility, co-ordination and concentration.
Kyohan Shotokan classes use modern teaching methods to fast-track traditional skills. We include throwing, ground work, forms and pad work and use static, dynamic and alive training. Our classes provide training for teenagers and adults only.

Training with us
Training in our classes is for adults and teenagers only and if you did karate as a child you’ll find that what we do is very different. We welcome people of all genders from a wide range of backgrounds to our classes.
Our goal is to help you be the best you can be and we believe in supporting students at all levels of ability with individual coaching in a friendly training environment. We are happy to see if we can support and help students that have any form of disability join in as much of our activity as they feel possible.
The Practical Karate Association teaches traditional Shotokan Karate kata to give context to our sparring drills and to provide exercises for home training. No marching up and down in lines! We use modern coaching methods alongside traditional martial arts skills to give our students support and training that is focused on them. Many of our students train elsewhere and use us as ‘a bit on the side’ to improve their skills.
The Kyohan Shotokan Karate classes are taught alongside Instructor John Titchen‘s classes in DART Karate . It’s possible to try one and switch to the other! Students can choose whether to wear plain white or plain black uniforms.
In addition to our regular classes students can take part in our world class scenario training Sim Days. These focus on the legal and moral issues of self protection.
