Our world class Kyohan Shotokan Karate classes involve close-quarter self defence focused striking, grappling, throwing, ground work, forms and pad work with static, dynamic and alive training. This is not creche or sport karate.

Classes are for adults and teenagers. If you did karate as a child you’ll find what we do is rather different. We welcome male and female students from a wide range of backgrounds to our classes.
Our goal is to help you be the best you can be. We believe in supporting students at all levels of ability with individual coaching in a friendly training environment.
Classes focus on paired grappling and striking exercises alongside pad work. Traditional Shotokan Karate kata are taught to give context to the sparring drills and to provide exercises for home training. We do not march up and down in lines! We believe in using modern coaching methods alongside traditional martial arts skills to give our students support and training that is focused on them.
With a background as a lecturer in Personal Safety for sixth form and secondary school students and as an international Self Protection Trainer, Instructor John Titchen ensurers that the wider syllabus provides advice and training tailored as necessary to individual students. Our focus is on helping students build a skill set that is appropriate to their physique and personality. For those that are less interested in a traditional kata focus we provide training in DART.
Our current training follows Covid Secure procedures to enable safe contact training. We are currently only running outdoor Kata and Pad work training for our Shotokan adults, we expect to move to the next phase of training for these from 17 May 2021. In June 2021 we will be happy to run a trial month for any interested teenagers and from July 2021 new adults may join.

In addition to our regular classes students can take part in our world class scenario training Sim Days which focus on the legal and moral issues of self protection in addition to testing the physical ability of students to act in self defence.
